Press release 32/2026

8 May 2026

The renovation of Mäntyniemi, the official residence of the President of the Republic of Finland, has been completed. The renovation began in March 2024 and was completed in May 2026. During the renovation, the State Guest House in Munkkiniemi served as the President’s temporary residence.

President Alexander Stubb and his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb will move to Mäntyniemi next week.

Mäntyniemi, designed by architects Raili and Reima Pietilä, was originally inaugurated in November 1993. The buildings and surrounding area of Mäntyniemi are protected under a town plan adopted by the City of Helsinki in 2021.

The objectives of the renovation were achieved

Mäntyniemi was designed as a Gesamtkunstwerk, in which the buildings, grounds, interiors, tableware, and works of art form a carefully considered whole. The renovation was carried out with respect for Mäntyniemi’s original design.

According to condition assessments, the main building was generally in good condition and had retained its original character. The primary reasons for the renovation were the need to upgrade the building services, modernise safety systems, and improve energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency was enhanced, for example, through the construction of two separate geothermal fields and an on-site solar power plant. The building services in all structures were renewed. The ventilation units were replaced and equipped with heat recovery systems. Furniture and lighting were also refurbished.

The objective was to make as few alterations as possible to the architecture of the main building. The most significant changes include the construction and renovation of elevators, the extension of the gatehouse, the construction of a sauna, improvements to the gate areas and traffic arrangements, and the refurbishment of security systems, fixtures, and lighting.

In the outdoor areas, the most notable changes concerned the construction of a fence on the Päiväranta plot donated by the City of Helsinki, along with the installation of security systems, traffic infrastructure and a service road. In addition, a carport and a waste management building were constructed, along with other earthworks.

Renovation costs

The buildings, furnishings, and landscape of Mäntyniemi are of significant architectural value. Their refurbishment was carried out with great care and with respect for the work of the original architects and designers. The inventory and restoration planning of movable property formed a significant part of the overall project.

The estimated cost of the renovation was approximately EUR 55 million, including the expenses arising from the use of the temporary residence. The project remained within its budget, or came in slightly under it. The final financial report will be completed during the summer, at which point the total costs will be confirmed.

Finnish contemporary art on display

President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb and his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb wish to honour Finnish contemporary art by placing works by 14 artists at Mäntyniemi.

The Finnish Cultural Foundation is responsible for the selection of artists and the overall planning of the Mäntyniemi × Contemporary Art project. On display at Mäntyniemi are works by Klaus Haapaniemi, Maija Isola, Jouni S. Laiti, Heikki Marila, Marika Mäkelä, Mayumi Niiranen-Hisatomi, Leena Nio, Erno Pennanen, Osmo Rauhala, Anna Retulainen, Kerttu Saali, Kustaa Saksi, Anna Tuori and Viggo Wallensköld.
