An analysis based on DNA’s mobile network data reveals considerable differences between Finnish municipalities. Smartphone mobile data usage is the lowest in Taivassalo and highest in Rovaniemi. The comparison examined mobile data usage on smartphones among DNA’s consumer customers from the beginning of 2026 until the end of August. As a counterbalance to all the scrolling, it is also worth taking a break from smart devices every now and then, for example on Smart Device Free Day (Älyvapaapäivä) in November.

DNA studied differences in smartphone mobile data usage across Finland. The municipalities were ranked based on the median data usage per mobile subscription, which reflects the data usage of a typical subscription. The comparison provides an interesting perspective on varying mobile data usage habits across the country.

The lowest data usage was recorded in Taivassalo, where the median data usage per mobile subscription was approximately 54 gigabytes during the period under review. Rääkkylä came next with a median of 60 gigabytes, followed by Kannonkoski with approximately 62 gigabytes. Kaskinen was also close to the same level at approximately 65 gigabytes, while the median in Konnevesi and Hyrynsalmi was around 69 gigabytes.

At the other end of the comparison was Rovaniemi, where the median data usage per subscription was 202 gigabytes during the period under review. It was followed by Kittilä at 193 gigabytes and Enontekiö at approximately 192 gigabytes. Data usage was also high in Kärsämäki and Tornio. Median data usage in Rovaniemi was almost four times as high as in Taivassalo.

“The comparison reveals some interesting geographical differences. Small municipalities from different parts of Finland feature prominently among those with the lowest mobile data usage, while Northern Finland stands out among the municipalities with the highest usage. Of course, data usage does not directly tell us how much time people spend on screens or what they use their phones for, but the differences between municipalities are considerable,” says Mikko Valtonen, Vice President of DNA’s mobile business.

Smartphones are an integral part of everyday life in Finland, but the amount of mobile data used on them varies considerably across the country.

“Data usage does not directly tell us how people spend their time, but the results remind us that there is much more to everyday life than scrolling through a screen. Every now and then, it is good to put the phone aside and focus on things like outdoor activities, hobbies or spending time together,” Valtonen concludes.

Smart Device Free Day (Älyvapaapäivä) offers a good opportunity to pause and reflect on our relationship with smart devices. Taking place for the fifth time, Smart Device Free Day on 1 November 2026 encourages people to put their smart devices aside and pay attention to the role they play in everyday life.

The analysis examined mobile data usage on smartphones among DNA’s consumer customers from the beginning of 2026 until the end of August. The municipalities were ranked according to median data usage per subscription, which reflects the data usage of a typical subscription. The comparison included municipalities with at least 100 DNA subscriptions.
