Tammet, a metal mesh manufacturer based in Tammisaari, is investing in defense and protection solutions for the Nordic countries, the Baltic states, and the rest of Europe. Founded in 1948, the company is responding to changing security needs through manufacturing in Finland and by applying its metal mesh expertise to new applications.

“Europe’s changing security environment and the increasing use of drones have made protecting critical infrastructure more important than ever. Maintaining the continuity of electricity and water distribution, telecommunications, and other essential functions requires both preparedness and practical protection solutions,” says Jan Silén, CEO of Tammet.

Tammet rapidly designs and develops protection solutions tailored to customer needs. The company has extensive technical expertise in the design and manufacture of metal mesh solutions.

According to Silén, the development of new security solutions builds on Tammet’s decades of international experience. In its defense and protection solutions, the company draws on its existing manufacturing expertise and develops it further to meet emerging needs.

Tammet expects its revenue to reach approximately €16 million in 2026. The company sees growth opportunities particularly in solutions that improve critical infrastructure protection, strengthen preparedness, and support the continuity of essential societal functions.

Modular Design Simplifies Installation and Repairs

D-Block is a modular metal mesh enclosure that creates a physical barrier between a drone and the asset being protected. The structure provides protection from the sides and above.

The design adapts to the requirements of the equipment and its location. Key features include quick installation, adaptability, and ease of repair. Damaged components can be replaced individually, while an access door and a service hatch facilitate maintenance of the protected equipment.

Designed for container shipping, the enclosure complements other security solutions. Each installation is planned according to the site’s intended use and threat assessment as part of an overall protection strategy.

Domestic Manufacturing Supports Security of Supply

According to Tammet, domestic industry contributes to security of supply not only through manufacturing capacity but also through the ability to develop, maintain, and repair products. Manufacturing in Tammisaari enables close collaboration between product development, production, and customers.

“When product development and manufacturing are located close to each other, customized solutions can be developed in close collaboration with production teams. Domestic manufacturing also supports product maintenance, spare parts availability, and the ability to make modifications as operational needs evolve,” Silén says.

The investment in defense and protection also demonstrates a local industrial company’s ability to adapt to changes in its operating environment. For Tammet, renewal means applying decades of metal mesh expertise to applications where protection and operational reliability are becoming increasingly important.

Factory Visit Highlights Industry’s Role in Security of Supply

Limnell’s factory visit highlighted the role of domestic industry in security of supply and the changing protection needs of critical infrastructure.

“Finland’s security also rests on the expertise of its domestic industry. As drones become more widespread, protecting critical infrastructure becomes even more important. Tammet is a good example of how Finnish industry can strengthen our security of supply and develop new security solutions. This presents significant opportunities for growth and exports for Finland,” Limnell says.
